Himachal Pradesh, planned properly

The Himalaya without the logistics

Himachal is where most Indian travellers meet the mountains for the first time, and for good reason: the altitude is manageable, the roads are properly surfaced, and you can be in deodar forest a few hours after landing. That accessibility is also the trap — the popular circuits get genuinely crowded in May and June. Every My Trip Companion Himachal tour package is routed and timed to keep you slightly off the peak-hour flow, whether that means a Kasol base instead of Manali town or leaving for Rohtang before the queue forms.

Five to seven days covers a comfortable Shimla–Manali or Manali–Kasol circuit; add days for Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj, or a week more for Spiti. We handle mountain-experienced drivers, stays chosen for their views rather than their star rating, and a trip host on call. Heading further north afterwards? The Manali–Leh highway leads straight into our Ladakh tour packages, or browse all our tour packages.

Why Himachal Pradesh

Three reasons Himachal suits almost every traveller

Forests you can actually walk in

Deodar and pine at a height where walking is a pleasure rather than an effort. Short, well-marked trails around Manali, Kasol and Dharamshala work for children and grandparents alike.

Short, scenic driving days

Almost nothing on the classic circuit is more than five or six hours apart, and the roads are among the best-maintained in the Indian Himalaya. Nobody spends the holiday in a car.

A high desert an hour away

Since the Atal Tunnel opened, Lahaul’s barren, Ladakh-like valleys are a day trip from Manali. Two completely different landscapes inside one short trip.

When to go

Best time to visit Himachal Pradesh

Himachal is open year-round, but the monsoon genuinely affects the mountain roads and is worth planning around.

SeasonMonthsWeatherBest for
SpringMar – AprMild ~10–24°C; blossom in the orchardsSightseeing, walks, fewer crowds than May
SummerMay – JunWarm ~15–30°C; the busiest weeksEscaping the plains, Solang, families on school holidays
MonsoonJul – mid SepHeavy rain; landslide and road-closure riskGreen valleys, low rates — Spiti via Kinnaur only
Autumn & winterOct – FebClear then cold, ~−5–18°C; snow from DecClearest views in Oct–Nov, snow in Manali and Shimla from late Dec

October and November give the clearest mountain views of the year with comfortable days. Avoid July to mid-September for anything involving high passes — landslides regularly close roads at short notice.

The circuit

Places every Himachal Pradesh itinerary should consider

Shimla

1–2 nights

The colonial hill station — the Ridge, Christ Church and the Mall, plus the UNESCO-listed Kalka–Shimla toy train if you have a morning to spare.

Gateway from Delhi/Chandigarh

Manali

2–3 nights

Old Manali’s cafés and orchards, the Hadimba temple in its deodar grove, and Solang Valley for adventure activities and snow.

~7 hrs from Shimla

Kasol & Parvati Valley

1–2 nights

Riverside cafés along the Parvati, the walk up to Kheerganga’s hot springs, and Malana on its own high shelf.

~2.5 hrs from Manali

Dharamshala & McLeod Ganj

2 nights

The seat of the Tibetan government-in-exile beneath the Dhauladhar wall — monasteries, the Triund trailhead and tea gardens at Palampur nearby.

~7 hrs from Manali

Bir Billing

1 night

One of the best-known paragliding sites in the world, plus Tibetan monasteries and a quiet café scene at a fraction of Manali’s bustle.

~1.5 hrs from Dharamshala

Spiti Valley

4+ nights · offbeat

Cold desert beyond Kunzum La — Key monastery, Chandratal lake and villages among the highest inhabited anywhere. A separate trip, not an add-on.

Loop via Kinnaur · Jun–Oct

Before you fly

Getting to Himachal

Most travellers arrive overland; the small mountain airports are convenient but weather-dependent.

By road

Delhi to Shimla is roughly 8–9 hours and Delhi to Manali 12–14, most of it on good highway. Overnight Volvo coaches are the common budget option; we usually recommend a private vehicle so you can stop where you like.

By air

Bhuntar (Kullu) serves Manali, Gaggal (Kangra) serves Dharamshala, and Shimla has a small airport. All three are short-runway fields where flights are cancelled in poor weather — always keep a road fallback.

By train

Broad-gauge rail reaches Chandigarh, Pathankot and Kalka. From Kalka the narrow-gauge Kalka–Shimla toy train is a UNESCO World Heritage line and a genuinely lovely five hours.

Permits

No permits are needed for the mainstream circuits. Rohtang Pass requires a vehicle permit with a daily cap, and the Spiti loop through Kinnaur has checkpoints — we handle both where your itinerary needs them.

Where you sleep

Where you sleep in Himachal

The state has the widest range of stays of any of our destinations — the trick is matching them to the valley.

Riverside & orchard hotels

Most trips

Comfortable mid-range and boutique properties along the Beas and Parvati, usually with balconies worth paying for. Book early for May, June and the Christmas week.

Heritage & colonial stays

Shimla

Restored colonial-era properties on the Shimla ridge — full of character, though the older ones can be cold and the walk up from the road is real.

Village homestays

Spiti & Tirthan

Family-run rooms in Kaza, Langza and the Tirthan valley. Shared bathrooms in places, patchy electricity, and the best food and company on the trip.

No surprises

Himachal Pradesh trip FAQs

March to June for warm weather and snow at Rohtang and Solang, though May and June are the busiest weeks of the year. October and November give the clearest mountain views with comfortable days. December to February brings snow to Manali and Shimla. Avoid July to mid-September for high passes because of landslide risk.

Five to seven days covers a relaxed Manali–Kasol or Shimla–Manali circuit. Add two more for Dharamshala and Bir, and treat Spiti as a separate nine-day trip rather than an extension.

It is one of the easiest Himalayan destinations for both. Altitudes on the main circuit stay low enough that acclimatisation is not a concern, driving days are short, and there are gentle walks everywhere. Rohtang and Spiti are the exceptions worth discussing first.

Yes. Rohtang requires a vehicle permit and the number issued each day is capped, so it needs booking in advance. Since the Atal Tunnel opened, many itineraries now go through to Lahaul instead, which needs no permit and is open far more of the year.

We would advise against it. The Spiti loop needs eight or nine days on its own to gain altitude safely through Kinnaur, and the road over Kunzum La is only open roughly June to October. Squeezed into a short Manali trip it becomes both rushed and risky.
